Did you know the same rules that apply for print, audio and video advertising are also true for Internet advertising?

In the United States the Federal Trade Commission is charged with the enforcement of 'truth in advertising' standards - even on the web.

Interestingly, it is the web designer or advertising agency that must validate the claims of the business. Essentially the manufacturers claims must be validated if advertising is going to be distributed that will make a claim. Since the ad agency or the web designer may be held partially liable for the advertising on a site it is always in their best interest to make sure the claims of the manufacturer can be validated.

Because certain product descriptions are lengthy and certain claims have conditions the use of disclaimers (or fine print) may be required to ensure you are following Internet advertising laws.

The FTC does allow autoresponder emails to 'fill in the blanks' on Internet advertising in some cases. If a potential customer signs up for more information then a full-disclosure of the products claims, contest conditions or other disclaimers may be sent to the prospect as a condition of full disclosure.

It is safe to say that many online businesses either are unaware of these rules or simply believe they will never be caught, but the FTC does look into fraudulent advertising - even on the web.

Understanding the rules of advertising will not only help you avoid problems later, it can actually help you devise a credible, well established advertising campaign now.

When deceptive Internet practices become commonplace, we begin to see a drop in consumer confidence in ecommerce. In effect, when an online business decides to flaunt the rules it provides a lasting distaste for other ecommerce solutions - even those who are above reproach.

If disclosures or disclaimers are needed the website owner must either provide all information in a conspicuous location near the originating claim OR they must provide a conspicuous link that will direct the consumer to the full extent of the advertising claim.

Online Opportunities - Is email Marketing Dead?

Is the money still in the list?

I feel compelled to ask the question because of my reaction to Online Opportunities in my inbox recently.

You know the scenario. You switch on your computer to find maybe 30 or 40 new emails begging your attention. A quick scan tells you that 98% can be deleted without opening them. Why? Because you have been getting bombarded over a period of time with the same old stuff. New launch, resale rights, teleseminars, the best pay plan, joint ventures etc. Sometimes I even get 4 or 5 of the same offers on the same day from several Joint Venture partners. I wonder if I'm alone here, but I have reached the point where I just cannot be bothered reading them anymore.

I now only join mailing lists where I perceive I am going to receive something of value. So how many more people are feeling the same? And, if lots of folk are thinking this way, doesn't this make it more difficult for me to build my list and you to build yours?

Have we reached saturation point? I think the answer to that is...almost. So where do we go from here? How are we going to market our Products, Services and Online Opportunities. Free Traffic Exchanges are bulging at the seams with sellers, not buyers. Pay Per Click Advertising is becoming increasingly more expensive, especially for Affiliates.

RSS seems to be the way forward if you have your own website. The main advantage is it's Spam Free. People have subscribed to receive updated information so there is none of the problems associated with Spam Filters and trying to get your message across. When using RSS feeds there is no problem with placing an advert as long as the overall content is useful to your readers.

Speaking of content, I believe we have now come full circle right back to where we were meant to be in the first place. That is, building properly optimized websites with quality content that will bring the customers to us and enhance their experience by offering something of value. How Often Should You E-mail Your List?

Last month someone on my e-mail list wrote me a long e-mail calling me an "Internet whore." He went on to say he was un-subscribing from my newsletter. He added that I was "slocking ***** and that I had "lost my ethics."

I thought about the anonymous writer and reflected on what he said. It made me wonder how often any of us doing business online should send out our email. Weekly? Monthly? Hourly?

Are there any rules at all?

Let's explore this together ...

Personally, I only endorse products I use and believe in. Because of my perceived status in the world these days as a best-selling author and marketing guru, I'm contacted by dozens of people *per day*, all asking me to sell their latest what-have-you. I do not endorse or sell 99% of them. That saves me from mailing my list too often.

Usually, as in the case of helping Kevin Hogan's book hit #2 at Amazon and Peggy McColl sell $30,000 worth of books in one day using the strategy I taught her, I don't make a dime for my efforts. I'm not complaining, either. I wanted to help them, and did. But I did not profit in any way. I felt telling my list about their offers was a gift to my list. So I mailed them.

Often I will discover something that sets my soul aflame. That's what happened when I discovered "The Millionaire's Mindset" book from Slovenia. I felt it was a great gift to the world and am honored to share it with people. I'm profiting from that, and gladly so. It's an astonishing book. I didn't mind sending out three e-mails about it to my list. My list didn't seem to mind, either, as hundreds of them ordered almost instantly. My friend, Rok, over in Slovenia said --

"Your list actually outperforms lists that are up to 8 times bigger ... and it outperforms them by about 85%. Your last mailing (which was the third mailing you did for the same book) generated 85% more responses than any other affiliate mailing in the pack."

I continue to create new products, too. Obviously, I want the people on my list to know about these. And just as obviously, I believe these products will help them -- or I would not be offering them. They are not ***** or in any way fluff. They are all useful and inspiring. Even when I release three e-books in one week, I think my list should be the first to know about them.

So back to the question we are wrestling with:

When is it too much? When are you e-mailing your list too often?

Now what I'm about to tell you may shock you. But it's the key point of this article.

I think if you have something of importance for your list, you should tell them as fast as possible. If that means you mail twice in one day -- again, assuming you just got news your list would want to hear -- then you mail them twice in one day.

I did that once. I sent an e-mail to my list in the morning. A few hours later I received an e-mail with such thrilling news in it that I couldn't resist sending out a follow-up email. I did. I knew I might be flamed, but felt it was worth the risk. As a result, 12 people thanked me. No one un-subscribed.

Look, if you are doing business online and have news of value to your followers, why *aren't* you telling them?

I think the only reason you wouldn't tell them is -- fear of being flamed, which means fear of receiving hate e-mail.

If you are afraid of being flamed, then you probably know you don't have anything of value for your list.

Think about it.

I'll repeat my statement: If you are afraid of being flamed, then you probably know you don't have anything of value for your list.

Let me explain:

If I'm on your list because I want to hear of your new products or services, and you have a new product or service and don't tell me, I have every right to be upset. I should have been given first shot at the offer.

For example, I'm a member of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd fan club. He's a hard rocking blues guitarist in the tradition of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Well, I signed up for Kenny's email list to be notified of his new releases and concert appearances. You might imagine my surprise -- and disappointment -- one day when I saw a new CD by him in a music store, one I never heard about by any e-mail from him. While I was glad to discover the new music, I was upset that no one notified me. After all, that's why I signed on to get his e-mails in the first place. I un-subscribed.

Here's another example:

Another friend of mine is a professional entertainer. I sat in the audience at one of his shows and heard him tell people, "If you sign on to my email list, I'll send you occasional updates about my appearances." He added, "I won't abuse your e-mail and send you too much e-mail."

Well, he blew it. Anyone who signs up for his e-mail *wants* to hear from him, not just whenever he has an appearance, but whenever he has news of interest to them. In my opinion, the entertainer was thinking of himself, not his audience. He was coming from pure fear.

I also know an executive coach who mails his list once a quarter or so. I keep wondering, "Doesn't he have a life? Doesn't he have any news? Doesn't he ever come across anything he's excited about and can't wait to tell his list?" Apparently not. To me, he looks lazy, inept, or just plain scared. I would never hire him as a coach.

According to Newsweek magazine, 90% of all spam is sent from a group of under 150 people. You're probably not one of them. Neither am I. But if you were considering doing bulk emails to strangers (known as spamming), you should also know that one spammer admitted she got only 25 responses -- after sending out 1,000,000 e-mails. And naturally, even the 25 responses weren't what she was looking for. Never, ever, spam -- ever. It doesn't work.

BUT if you have a list of people who have *asked* to receive relevant information and offers from you, then not sending them e-mail when you have news for them is a big mistake.

Are you with me here?

I'm *not* advocating e-mailing your list mindlessly, just because *you* think you have something to say.

I *am* advocating e-mailing your list whenever you have news *they* will deem important. If that means every day for a week, then so be it.

Finally, what about the person who wrote me the flaming e-mail and called me an Internet Whore?

I have no idea who he is. He may not know who he is, either. I showed the e-mail to a peer and he said, "That guy needs a therapist." I don't know if he does or not, but the great gift in his e-mail is that he prompted me to again think about how often we E-mail Marketers should e-mail, and it resulted in this article.

Yes, of course you do! Likely you know what a sales funnel is too!
But just for those of you who you don't it's a simple process of taking a visitor and "funnelling them through a process"..
In it's basic format it looks something like this...
Visitor = Opt in = Sale = Second sale = Third sale = Ongoing sales = Eventual Travel through funnel
Now in this process you have information, support, guidance, up selling, cross selling, down selling and back end selling... You may have training, cloning and a truckload of other goodies going on..
People may leave this funnel at any given point, but you can "control" to some point how they leave your processing.

Many people in Internet Marketing have asked me..... "How do I get people into my list to begin with.."?
Well there are MANY ways, but one that I personally love and one that I know my own mentor teaches is...

Lets look at flower arranging as my example.. Lets say that this was my area of expertise, then I would probably start with a free eBook or better still a free video on basic flower arranging techniques and or tips...
That would be something my audience would be interested in, and they would be willing to share their email address for!
What is the cost of this method?
Well, there are MANY things you could use, and you do not even have to create them yourself.
Think about original marketing techniques... Offline, you would have to pay to advertise in a magazine, newspaper or journal in your field. You could pay for leaflets, inserts, TV ads, Radio ads, Business Cards, gift items with your contact information on and much more to spread the word about your business.. But this would not come cheap!
Now you can set up a web site, create a product at a very low budget and then give that away for free in return for the right to market to them in future - their email address..
Better still, you create a method for making money on the upsell to this free exchange and then you give that first upsell to your members to keep a high percentage of the profit.. This makes them an affiliate of your product, and they will then "advertise" on your behalf..
The incentive for them is income and to let people know about a great service or product you have and you get more names on your list to market to for the future...

According to a new survey carried out by Alliance & where ID_NUM=9270; Leicester, one in five small business owners view tax as their greatest concern. The Chancellor has announced in his last budget that companies with profits below œ10,000 will not have to pay any corporation tax with effect from 1 April 2002. The question to be asked is: does that announcement make incorporation a more attractive option compared to being a sole trader?
The answer is that from a tax point of view, it is advantageous to trade through a limited company as long as the income is drawn from the company by the owners as dividends from their shares and the amount of dividends drawn is restricted below the 40% band rate (i.e. œ31,063 for tax year 2002/03). That way, the owners have no further personal tax ("income tax") to pay. Moreover, dividends are not subject to national insurance contributions. This is excellent news of course. But, if dividend income falls within the higher rate bracket of income tax (i.e. above œ34,515), they will be taxed at 22.5% on the excess, which of course will increase the tax burden. The company profits are subject to corporation tax rates. Those are lower than income tax rates.
The most catastrophic scenario is when the director takes his reward from the company as salary. Then his/her salary is taxed at income tax rates (like a sole trader's income). That is because, unlike sole traders, the tax system treats companies as separate from their owners because a company is a separate legal entity. The problem is that the income taxes are higher than corporation tax rates. On top of that, they will be subject to employee and employer national insurance contributions, which of course increase the tax burden and render his position worse than even an unincorporated business ("sole trader"), because NIC Class 1 on payroll are higher than NIC Class 2 paid by self employed.
In contrast, a self employed person ("sole trader") is taxed at income tax rates on the profits from his business, which are added to his other sources of income. As it has already been mentioned, income tax rates are overall higher than corporation tax rates. On top of income tax, national insurance contributions class 4 are payable on the business profits within a specified band (7% on profits between œ4,615and œ30,420). National insurance contributions Class 2 are also paid by self-employed people, although those are lower than those payable by company directors on their salaries.
To illustrate the above, let's take a simple example. We have a limited company and a sole trader. They both make œ60,000 profits each in the tax year 2002/03. We assume that the company director takes a salary equal to the amount of his personal allowances (untaxed income) of œ4,615 and the balance as dividends. The company will pay corporation tax at 19% equal to œ10,523 and nothing else. The sole trader will pay income tax œ16,542, National insurance Class 2 œ104 and National insurance Class 4 œ1,806. Total œ18,452. The bottom line is that the person that has incorporated his business into a limited company will make a tax saving of œ7,929 compared to a sole trader! Isn't that fantastic?
Somebody might be wondering: why is this entire happening? The official explanation is that, this government, to help the economy grow, encourages people to leave as much profits within their businesses to be reinvested, instead of being taken out and spent.
The "unofficial line" is that, as a matter of fact, for years the Inland Revenue has tried to reclassify the self-employed. The 1% in NIC hike on staff salaries above the NIC threshold from next April adds to both the employees' and employers' tax burden and may more than offset the saving from the corporation tax zero rate on the first œ10,000 of profits.
Aren't there any other matters to consider in deciding whether to incorporate or not?
Higher administration costs to comply with company law, payroll and bookkeeping is one factor. Another issue is pension planning. Extracting profits out of the company as dividends rather than salary means that there will be no "net relevant earnings" and therefore pension contributions can't be made. But the advent of stakeholder pension plans has meant that contributions up to œ3,600 per year can be made without the need for any earnings. If a person does not wish to transfer funds in existing plans into stakeholder because of high charges, there is a way out: the best net relevant earnings (i.e. salary) in five consecutive years can be used for making contributions for the next five years, even if there were no salaries in the remainder four years. It is comforting to know that entitlement to basic state pension is not affected by taking a salary from the company at the level of a person's personal allowances i.e. œ4,615.
Furthermore, an individual may decide not to bother with pension plans and instead invest in ISA. Often, these can be more efficient than pensions but that's beside the scope of this article. If that option is taken, no salary is necessary.
Another factor is business motoring. It might be tax advantageous for an unincorporated business that owns many cars not to incorporate because if these cars have some private use there will be benefits in kind taxed on the users. These are generally higher than the straight apportionment between private and business for all car running costs in the case of sole traders.
The conclusion is that there can be considerable tax savings waiting the sole trader who decides to go down the road to incorporation. But, one needs to proceed with caution and careful planning. And don't forget the biggest advantage of incorporation, which is Protection from Personal Liability. Incorporating is one of the best ways to protect a business owner from personal liability. Shareholders of a company are generally not liable for the obligations of the company. Creditors of a company may seek payment from its assets, but not the assets of the shareholders. This means that business owners may engage in business without risking their homes or other personal property.

Often the difference between affiliates who drive traffic and sales to their affiliate programs' sites depends on little things that they do month after month. I know this is the case for me. Here's what we do.
1. You Have To Do Something - Anything.
I was on the phone with an affiliate manager for one of the large Internet Marketing courses and during that conversation he told me an interesting thing or two. He told me that they get a lot of e-mails and phone calls from affiliates wondering why they haven't made any money from their program.
Every single person that has asked that question all had the same problem. They hadn't bothered to do anything at all. These people hadn't even bothered to put up a banner that was readily available on their websites, let alone do any of the better ways of promoting a program.
You have to do something. Start with the easy stuff. If your affiliate program gives you banners or text ads to put on your site, use them. Put them up immediately. There - you've just taken your first positive action towards making some money from your affiliate program.
2. Keep In Contact With Your Affiliate Manager:
Hopefully your affiliate program keeps you up to date by way of a regular newsletter or some sort of affiliate update. However, regardless of whether they do or not it's important to keep in contact with your affiliate manager yourself.
Send them an e-mail and introduce yourself, tell them what you are doing in the way of promotion for their program. If they sell more than one product or service, find out what product is doing really well currently. Ask them what types of creative are working best for that product. Is it a particular classified ad, HTML e-mail ad, banner, pop-up?
There are numerous instances where this really worked well for me. Let me share one with you.
I was writing an article about word-processing for a recent issue of my ezine and I was thinking of using an ad for a certain piece of software (which was a cost per action campaign), in my top ad spot. So, I asked my affiliate manager of the CPA network that I belong to if this campaign was still going to be around when I published my article. He replied back and said, "Yes, but no-one likes that offer, why don't you try advertising this other software instead".
As a result, instead of advertising an offer that probably would have flopped, I ended up selling several pieces of software that week and got myself a nice check in the mail.
3. Spread The Word.
Get an ad into your own e-zine, rotate that ad for a few issues and see how it does, and then when you've got a winning responsive ad, try some other e-zines that would be a good match for the product that you're advertising.
Here's the one that really works well for me. Send out a solo mailing to your opt-in ezine list.
There are two key elements as to why this works so well. If you've been building a good subscriber list, they're more inclined to listen to what you have to say than some stranger that they run across somewhere on the web. For me there is an additional factor here. My list tends to be more receptive to solo ads because I don't send them a lot of solo mailings in the first place. So, they're less inclined to say "Oh no not another one - Delete!"
The second reason, and this is perhaps the more important one - I personalize it. This doesn't mean that I address everyone by their name, (although that would really helpful but my list server is kind of behind the times :-) ). What I mean, is that the e-mail reads less of an ad and is more conversational in tone. "Advertorial" is the correct term for this type of an ad I believe.
It comes off far more believable than most of the ads out there. Instead of pushing against a brick wall and saying "Here's a big long ad - read it and buy what I'm flogging", I'm dropping in for a friendly chat with a neat suggestion or answer to your problem, want, or need. It works great!
There you have it - Three easy steps to help boost your affiliate earnings. Implement them and you'll be on the road to seeing better results.

Link building has always been a hot topic. In the beginning of the web hyperlinks were virtually the only way to get visitors to a site, because search engines were in their infancy. When search engines grew to be the major source of the web traffic, links didn't lose their weight, as search algorithms started to rank sites according to the quantity and quality of their incoming links. And today links become increasingly important with the growing significance of the new Web 2.0 social networks.

Thus, links rule the Internet. Once a routine task of a webmaster, link building has emerged itself into a full scale industry with millions of dollars in turnover. Ranking algorithms perceive links as a proxy for a human judgment, or a user's positive endorsement of a page. The idea is as follows: a user discovers a page, likes its content, links to the page, and the page gets higher ranking. This is the so-called 'natural way' of acquiring links. The natural way of acquiring link works is too slow and can be pretty unfair. New pages on big and established websites are far more likely to be discovered by web users, and these pages will get the major part of the new links (like 90%); while new pages on fresh sites will get trinkets. This is a serious defect of the link ranking system which is discussed more in details in my article Popularity Ranking Faults.
Since the natural way of getting links for a new website can take forever, some additional boost is required. There are many strategies of link building able to ensure you some initial ranking and exposure, which are necessary to make the 'natural way' work. Some of these strategies can be very tricky and do more harm than use. So it is critically important to keep in mind the following tips of link building.
Link Building Tips
Be a user when building links. The point is to make your link exchanges look like they are acquired the natural way. Make sure that your links appear in places where search engine expect them to be. This should be pages relevant to your content. Link must be in the page copy or in a sidebar possibly among the other links pointing to pages also relevant to your topic. The anchor text must look naturally - so no keyword stuffing.
Analyze your own motives of linking to the sites you like. What motivates you to cite a web resource? Is it a collection of online tools or handy tutorials? Or may be it is a provoking title? Apply this 'reverse engineering' to your pages, and use unique interesting content to attract links.
Avoid things that can damage your reputation in the eyes of search engines. No link farms, suspicious looking websites or poor quality link exchanges. Forget the reciprocal links - they no longer have any significant weight. Do not participate in three-way or similar linking schemes - these attempts to disguise reciprocal linking are easily to detect. NASA managed to get a man on the Moon with computers less powerful than a GameBoy, so why do you think Google can't discover link triangles with all the computing resources at its disposal?
Buying links. This practice is pretty much discouraged by Google, because it undermines the idea of the proxy for human judgment. So you have to be especially savvy when buying links. Avoid link trading sites or any site publicly announcing that is sells links. Don't mix buying links with paid advertising. You pay for an advertisement on a high traffic page expecting visitors referred by your ad. Buying links has a different purpose - increasing your link popularity.
Do not be obsessed with backlinks. There is an intense focus on link building but not enough focus of content creation. Links must reflect the quality of content. If you think your site has not enough incoming links, you should think about how to improve the quality of content and make it more appealing, not about more link exchanges.
Link penalties. Many people are afraid to get penalized for linking or being linked by fishy websites. If there is a need to put a link to a site which you do not want to be related with, use rel 'nofollow'. Google confirms that this attribute is critical in link analysis, so you should be fine. Links from dubious sources to your site are out of your control and all the major search engines assure that they don't punish people for that. However too many links from such sites (like tens of thousands) can bring an unwanted attention of search engine quality teams. They can ban your site if they found you responsible for boosting your rankings, but you can always submit reinclusion.
To sum up:
Make your linking strategy look natural. Avoid the known patterns of artificial link building and do not obsess with links at the expense of content creation.

The Search Engine Times Are Changing!

I have been a cyber citizen now for many years. I was lucky enough to be part of the internet revolution from quite early days as far as the UK goes. I have a lot of experience of using the internet as a 'surfer'.
What amazes me is the growth of the market relating to the provision of search engines services. I remember when Yahoo! was just about the only search. These where the days of unbiased search results. The search engine market is now big business, and payment to be listed in one way or another is common.
Google, although apparently providing unbiased results, allows PPC or Pay Per Click advertising by its AD Words campaign. When searching on Google you may notice the small advertisement boxes on the right of the returned results. These are free to display but incur a cost to the website owner/advertiser when clicked. Hence pay per click!
Other search engines like Yahoo provide a pay to be included service. Where you may not actually be paying to be listed in search engine results you will be manually approved (or not!) to be included in there yahoo directory for a fee.
But things look like they are due to change. With income now viable for search engine providers, other big players are on the horizon all wanting a slice of the cake. MSN has recently stopped using other search engines results on its pages and has replaced them with its own search engine.
Both MSN and Yahoo now appear to be cataloguing the internet like crazy trying to catch up, and over take, the biggest search engine we all loving call Google.
As a web designer/web application builder and search engine optimisation fanatic I watch closely the log files of my many websites. These files can tell you a host of things. One interesting thing to follow is the visits your site gets from search engine bots (or spiders). These are the automated parts of a search engine that travel around the internet "reading" pages and deciding what they contain, how important they are, and how they sit in relation to other pages and sites in the tangled web called the internet.
MSN for one appears to be visiting all my sites very frequently. Most of the time visiting up to twenty pages per visit. This compares to googles one to three pages when it can feel like it. Yahoo too seems to be doing the same as MSN.
With these two search engines spidering the internet like crazy, it could mean that google has to start worrying about its top spot.
This my friend, should start you thinking. If you own or run a web site, and search engine traffic is important to you, is it friendly to Yahoo/MSN two search engine spiders? Do they like the same things Google does? If Google disappeared tomorrow, would your business still be able to exist?

If you resell products or services on your web site this is done through affiliate links. Quite often your visitor comes to your site, clicks an affiliate link and leaves; perhaps never to return again.
You MISS capturing the email address!
So how can you ensure you get that email address?
While you will never capture everybody's email address there is a way to increase the number of email addresses you do capture.
You need to redesign your web site and change the focus away from affiliate programs and towards getting email addresses.
Here are 3 web design techniques you can use immediately:
1. Offer a free newsletter on your home page or entry page and make the sign up process really easy.
2. Offer a free email course on your home page or entry page.
3. Take the affiliate links OFF your home page. You are much better putting affiliate links in your newsletter or email course.
To have a better chance of getting the email address it comes down to offering your visitors something else before giving them access to your affiliate links.
The best ‘offer' is something for free like a free newsletter, free email course or free ebook.
Believe me, altering your web site like this does work. I used to have lots of affiliate links on my home page but not many sales.
Now, most of the people who purchase through my affiliate links are already subscribers to my newsletter or my email courses.
Do not underestimate the importance of this. Redesign your web site to capture your visitors' email addresses.

If you are not making a ton of money with affiliate programs, you will need to try and figure out why. We all know a good affiliate program can be hard to come by.
Here are a few that I really like, and have been with for a while:
1. Progressive Health
2. Zenmed
Before spending a lot of time and money marketing an affiliate program, always check it out first. There are a number of ways to do this.
1. Search through the hundreds of affiliate directories online and look for comments about it.
2. Ask them how many affiliate they have, and what the top earners are making, as well as the average affiliate.
3. Give the program a trial run - just enough to make a few sales that will allow you to recieve a payment from them. This will ensure they pay as offered.
4. Spread the word! Lots of affiliate money stays on the table because we do not refer others. If you know other affiliates, send them an email and let them know about your new program. Of course, send your affiliate link id to earn 2nd tier revenue if possible!

Does that sound too good to be true? Welcome to the world of affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing holds interesting possibilities for entrepreneurs like you who want to try a new business option. Almost anyone who sells online has an affiliate marketing program to help expand their business. This article will give you a few tips on how to improve your chances of success as an affiliate. What is affiliate marketing? In simple words it’s what you get paid (also called “referral fee”) for directing visitors to your website to other merchants’ sites. Compensation is based on the value of each visit, and could take the form of a pay per click or a commission for each sale. Affiliate Marketing is a popular method of promoting web businesses in which an affiliate is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer provided through his efforts. It is a modern variation of the practice of paying finder's-fees for the introduction of new clients to a business. Compensation may be made based on a certain value for each visit (Pay per click), registrant (Pay per lead), or a commission for each customer or sale (Pay per sale), or any combination.
Most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing, from the merchant's viewpoint, is that with this pay for performance model, no payment is due to an affiliate until results are realized.
Some e-commerce sites run their own affiliate programs while other e-commerce vendors use third party services provided by intermediaries to track traffic or sales that are referred from affiliates. Some businesses owe much of their growth and success to this marketing technique, although research has shown in general the increase to be approximately 15-20% of online revenue.
Some advertisers offer multi-tier affiliate programs that distribute commission into a hierarchical referral network of sign-ups and sub-affiliates. In practical terms: publisher "A" signs up the affiliate program with an advertiser and gets rewarded for the agreed activity conducted by a referred visitor. If publisher "A" attracts other publishers ("B", "C", etc.) to sign up for the same affiliate program using her sign-up code all future activities by the joining publishers "B" and "C" will result in additional, lower commission for publisher "A".
Snowballing, this system rewards a chain of hierarchical publishers who may or may not know of each others' existence, yet generate income for the higher level signup. A similar structure has been successfully implemented by a company called Quixtar.com. Quixtar has implemented a network marketing structure to implement its affiliate marketing program for major corporations such as Barnes & Noble, Office Depot, Sony Music and hundreds more. Most affiliate programs are simply one-tier.
Merchants who are considering adding an affiliate strategy to their online sales channel should research the different technological solutions available to them. Some types of affiliate management solutions include: standalone software, hosted services, shopping carts with affiliate features, and third party affiliate networks.
In its early days many internet users held negative opinions of affiliate marketing due to the tendency of affiliates to use spam to promote the programs in which they were enrolled. As affiliate marketing has matured many affiliate merchants have refined their terms and conditions to prohibit affiliates from spamming.
Currently there is much debate around the affiliate practice of spamdexing and many affiliates have converted from sending email spam to creating large volumes of autogenerated webpages each devoted to different niche keywords as a way of SEOing their sites with the search engines. This is sometimes referred to as spamming the search engine results. Spam is the biggest threat to organic search engines whose goal is to provide quality search results for keywords or phrases entered by their users. Google's algorithm update dubbed "BigDaddy" in February 2006 which was the final stage of Google's major update dubbed "Jagger" which started mid-summer 2005 specifically targeted this kind of spam with great success and enabled Google to remove a large amount of mostly computer generated duplicate content from its index.
